The Portland council has been strong in both tradition and forward vision, with proven programs and resources to support youth. The same values that guided Camp Fire in the early years remains today: respecting diversity among individuals, preserving the environment, giving community service, fostering self-esteem, teaching leadership.
Societal changes affect the needs of youth and thus the shape of Camp Fire programs. Council membership is more diverse now than in the past. Instead of a single program focus in limited settings, the council has developed multiple programs that are delivered according to need and accessibility. The council has worked to become an advocate for youth by extending services annually through programs serving youth in grades K through 12 in Washington and Multnomah counties
